Year of the Sheer with Rihanna, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian & Pam Andrews

The attempts to make a fashion statement this year have tested the hypothetical limits held by the question, “What would happen if I wore a dress that exposed my…?”

South African and international female celebrities have answered that question with show-stopping sheer gowns that have left the public speechless.

2014 has been a year for the daring and celebrities have stepped onto the red carpet unashamedly with sheer dresses.

After almost 50 years of feminism, I’m not sure if it’s surprising that many women have chosen to bare their bodies freely in supposedly drop-dead gorgeous dresses that have literally caused havoc on the internet.

Emancipation from sexist limitations in a so called patriarchal world has come with bold choices to reveal more than conceal.

Female celebrities have tested this notion to the point where questions such as “Where’s your dignity?” and the meaning of terms such as style and elegance have become complex.

Whether you agree with their actions or not, the fact is it’s done. People asked what would be in store for fashion in 2014 and the designers and celebrities have answered.

Check out the display of dresses that have marked 2014 the year of the sheer:

Rihanna, wore a dress with a translucent sheen of glittering Swarovski crystals  when she showed up at the CFDA Awards to receive her Fashion Icon Award. She made a bold statement with this dress.

The public got the shock of their lives when Bleona wore a netted dress at the 2014 AMAs. We weren’t sure whether this was a fashion hit or a complete disaster.

Lady Victoria is no stranger to the sheer dress. This is just one of her sheer dresses designed by  Gaurav Gupta, which she wore at the The Weinstein Company and Netflix afterparty following the 2014 Golden Globe Awards.

Rihanna striked again in a Tom Ford gown at the amfAR Inspiration Dinner. Here, she proved her reign as a fearless female celebrity.

Beyonce looked stunning at the 2014 American Music Video Awards. She wore a sexy sheer black lace long sleeves dress designed by Nicolas Jebran . Flawless!

Cara Delevingne‘s black sheer ensemble at the GQ Men Of The Year awards turned heads. The model of the year has a strong red carpet presence and this look attests to her greatness.

Kim Kardashian West accepted the award for Woman of the Year GQ Men Of The Year Awards while dressed in a Atsuko Kudo latex bodysuit and hate couture custom-made gunmetal skirt by Ralph & Russo. The star who officially broke the internet with her nude cover for Paper Magazine, showed off her amazing figure in this figure-hugging outfit.

Oh Pam Andrews

She caused uproar on social media with the striking dress which she wore to the 2014 Channel O Music Awards. Many people seemed to have an opinion about her outfit, but regardless of the opinions, we can all agree that this was brave.

2014 has come to an end and the ladies have showed us FLAMES on the red carpet.

Let’s see what 2015 has in store for fashion.
