Jacob Zuma: “I am a Homosexual”

South Africa’s Constitution protects citizens from unfair discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

However, the lived reality for many LGBTIs (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and inter-sexed) is far from what the Constitution guarantees.

The President needs to address this because it means the Constitution has not been realized.

This is what leadership looks like

To remove the stigma associated with being HIV positive, Nelson Mandela wore a shirt that read, “HIV positive”.

On The Big Debate, a representative from EFF mentioned the idea of President Jacob Zuma doing the same thing to remove the stigma of being homosexual – that is, wearing a shirt that reads, “I am a homosexual” in order to combat the stigma associated with being LGBTI.

I can imagine the objections.

“We need to talk about this first; it’s such a big step”.

Absolutely. We desperately need to have conversations about gender, sex and sexuality in this country – and the President needs to spearhead these.

“Homosexuality is a sin according to the bible”.

Besides the fact that I hotly contest that, it is written, “[Jesus] was made sin for our sake” and “Let he who is without sin be the first to cast a stone”.

HIV and AIDS were once seen as divine punishment; that’s where the stigma came from. With more education, and with high-profile figures identifying with the subjects of this divine punishment, people were moved to reconsider this position.

“The President is a married man”.

Many married men are homosexual. And President Nelson Mandela was married when he wore the shirt that says, “HIV Positive”

“The President is a ‘real’/Zulu/African man”

Many “real”/Zulu and African men are homosexual.

We need the President to act on LGBTI’s behalf without delay.

I dare him to be man enough to do this. Publically.
